THE PREACHER VS THE QUEEN OF THE COAST - by Don Norman Obinna.
As you are about to read this column, thank God wholeheartedly if you are among those he has delivered from boarding public buses. The menace associated with this act, to say the least is exasperating. Apart from the
driver's/conductor's nuisance which you have no choice but to tolerate, you also have these obnoxious and guileful brown envelop carrying preachers to contend with. Apparently, religion has become the opium of
the people simply because of the government dereliction of its statutory obligations. The more people are impoverished, the more they become impressionable to all sorts of messages in the name of the gospel. The more
unemployment accelerates the more young men and women resorts to self-serving preaching as a means of survival. It is so loathsome to say the least that this is
done without considerations for the passengers' suscepi- bilities. Beside the badly spoken English language mostly used by some of them to convey the message and. saliva often poured on passengers sitting close-by, the content of their messages are oftentimes contradictory to the real gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. My experience inside these public buses these past few weeks my car broke down upon my return from Abia state because of bad roads is not palatable at all but, at least I found this particular one very interesting to share with you on this column. The day was Friday last week and the weather also was not too convivial. I hurriedly boarded a bus heading to Ikeja from Obalende, to at least avoid
being drenched by the rain which at that point had already started drizzling. Sitting beside me was a young man wearing a faded but well ironed suit probably in his 40's. As the bus was about to move, this young man stood up and greeted everyone in the bus. His
mission was to preach the gospel which according to him, he has been doing for the past 20 years. As he was about to commence preaching, he ordered the men putting on caps to put them off, while the women he commanded to cover their heads as a sign of respect to the presence of God which he boasted was already over flowing in the bus. I was totally dismayed by the alacrity with which almost everybody in the bucomplied with this command. After the praying bout and
indecipherable tongue speaking, the shout of "Halleluiah" rented the entire bus as he commanded passengers to wave their problems away by waving unto the Lord. Trust Nigerians, the compliance was very
tremendous. Buoyed by this, he commandingly introduced himself as a prophet of God sent to deliver people, especially passengers from bondage and
accident causing demons. He indirectly derided the passengers as people of little faith and challenged God to physically manifest his power in this bus if indeed he is God's servant. His preaching to those willing to listen was on the powers and the manipulations of evil forces and marine spirits. As we got to the middle of Third Mainland Bridge, he stopped the preaching abruptly
and started mumbling. Quietly but with a strong voice he said, "I perceived the presence of the queen of the Coast in this bus". Gullibly some shouted, "The blood of
Jesus". At this point, the prophet violently began to bind and loose and subsequently demanded that all eyes should be closed. Suddenly there was this horrific scream which interrupted the prayer and forced
every eyes opened. Behold, it emanated from a beautiful, fair in complexion and smartly dressed lady sitting
at the rear seat of the LT 35 bus. With her eyes ablaze with contrived anger and contorted face, she pointed at the so called man of God and declared, "This is my
territory and how dare you think you can stop me? You dare not disparage my kingdom henceforth, understand! She yelled at the prophet. In fact, you must be extremely discernable to understand that this was a
contrived plot ingeniously executed by two guile fellows just to extort gullible and unsuspecting passengers in the name of God. At this point, there was an uneasy calm inside the bus; passengers were already jittery,
especially those sitting at the rear seat with the so called queen of the coast. Expectedly the prophet replied in a commanding tune "shut up you blood sucking demon from the marine world. I come against you in the name
of our Lord Jesus". With her eyes fixed on the preacher, the lady laughed scornfully and wanted to utter some words, but the so called prophet cuts in. "I seal your mouth with heavenly super glue. And by the power
vested upon me as the oracle of Jehovah the most high God, I put you into temporary sleep in the mighty name of Jesus" he commanded. But trust Nigerians, almost
everybody was too nervous to chorus Amen, at least not in the middle of the lagoon. It will be like insulting someone right in her compound. "God of Elijah, Fireeeeeeeeeee," He thundered. Lifting his hands above his shoulders he continued, Jehovah ! No be you bi the snake wey dey swallow snake? The burning fire, oya! Gbooosshhaa! After putting up a little resistance, the mighty queen of the coast staggered a bit and suddenly fell into sleep as commanded by the prophet. Much to the relief of the passengers, especially those at the rear seat who kept shouting, "Thank you Jesus". Buoyed by the
ingenuousness of the passengers the prophet continued, "The Lord did not lead me into this bus accidentally. I am here to save your souls from this blood sucking demon from hell". Pointing at the queen of the coast, he
continued. Her plan was to cause a fatal accident and subsequently remit blood to her insatiable kingdom, but the Lord has a counter plan." Praise the Lord" he thundered in heavily Edo accent. But people responded
pragmatically. In fact, the passengers' subservience to this prophet was so nauseating to say the least. The fact that almost everyone acted as if they were under spell made me quiver with anger. I shook my head in disbelief; does this mean that Nigerians go to church in vain? I mumbled to myself rhetorically. At least the
bible is replete with compendious information about God and his modus operandi. No wonder the bible says "my people perished because of lack of knowledge". I concluded frustratingly. After some abracadabra and fake spiritual demonstrations, the prophet cleared his
throat and began to prophesy, this time in outdated English language reminiscent of the King James Version. "There is a man in this bus, who loves everything and anything in skirt. Repent ye son of man for the anger of
God is come upon ye and your end shall be worst than your beginning". He warned repeatedly. With his eyes firmly closed and arms fidgety he continued, "There is a young lady in this bus whose plan is to spend this
weekend with a man who is not her husband. Thou shall try it not as ye may not be alive to tell the story". But before he could conclude the statement; the gullible had shouted, "It is not my portion in Jesus name".
My frustration grew further at this point; how can people be so dumb? Of course a man having so many bed partners or a lady planning to spend weekend in a man's house on a Friday are commonly acceptable social activities in Lagos; albeit religious people
who will argue on the contrary. So it is expected that a bus carrying approximately 23 passengers will have all manner of people on board. I was so disappointed that people could not figure out that this man was psychologically manipulating them in the name of God.
As I sat still pondering the matter with my eyes fixed on the so called prophet, he sneaked a surreptitious glance at me. Absolutely noticing my slightly protruded
stomach, he continued. "Thank you Jesus. Oh! There is a young man here with a pot-belly, hummmmm! How long shall thou continue to imbibe alcohol? I see death coming like a whirled wind. But thank God your
deliverance has come. It shall not be your portion, in the mighty name of Jesus" he shouted. The chorus of Amen like a thunder rented the bus once again to my sheer
trepidation. At this point I was indignant and was almost stirred to protest, but quickly subjected my
temperament under control. Apparently aware of my disposition, the so called prophet threw a light-hearted banter just to placate me and also ameliorate the almost tensed atmosphere in the bus. Noticing that he was running out of time, he hurriedly asked everyone to bow down their heads for prayer. After the prayer, he
afterward brought out a large quantity of brown envelops and cajoled passengers to give cheerfully to the Lord of harvest who is seeking for that faithful person to bless abundantly according to his riches in Christ
Jesus. Absolutely astonished by the passengers'
response, he tactically admonished them on the power of seed. And thereafter challenge them to try God with their seeds. He mentioned all kinds of seed and their ripple effects and encouraged the passengers not to
miss this wonderful opportunity with the Lord for a last minute miracle. Of course the acquiescence was amazing. Smiling, he asked everybody to lift their hands up for benediction. As he shouted in the name of Jesus, behold there was a heavy sneeze; alas, the queen of the coast is back to consciousness again staring at everyone to the consternation of the passengers. As he turned his attention towards her, he amorously asked, "Are you ready for your salvation now"? Humbly the
queen of the coast nodded in affirmative. "Are you ready to abjure marine spirit and accept Jesus as your Lord and saviour"? The prophet asked, this time more intimately. Yes, she replied covering her face with her
palm." Do you desire a total deliverance from the marine world"? He asked yet again, encouraging her to speak up. Crying, she replied "yes". "In that case you will follow me to my church immediately" he ordered the
lady. At this point, the prophet leapt for joy and
ordered everybody to put their hands together for the Lord. As this was going on, he beckoned the queen of the coast to rise onto her feet and follow him. He gleefully
thanked everybody in the bus for granting himaudience. And the next thing we heard was, "driver owa oooO! 7up mo ti fe bole. I could not help but laugh uncontrollably as the queen of the coast hurriedly alighted from the bus with her man. Did I hear
someone say 'a perfect drama filled with contrivances of plot? ' Lagos na waa!

SAMUEL ETO'O ABOUT TO MAKE HISTORY.
It was at the Nou Camp that Eto'o elevated himself into the upper echelons of the world's best players, scoring for fun for the Catalans - with 125 strikes to his name in just 183 games. GOV.SULLIVAN CHIME DONATES VEHICLES TO SSS IN ENUGU STATE.
At a brief ceremony held at the Government House on Wednesday, the Governor, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Richard Chime said the vehicles were intended to assist the SSS in its operations.
He noted that security would be hard to obtain without effective intelligence gathering mechanism, and expressed hope that the vehicles would support the efforts of the SSS.
Chime further assured that the government would continue to pay prior attention to security matters to ensure that the state remained a safe and secure place for both social and business activities to thrive.
Receiving the vehicles the State Director of SSS, Mr. Victor Duru commended Governor Chime for his unwavering commitment to the entrenchment of security and peace in the state, which according to him, had led to its being regarded as one of the safest states in the country.
He also praised what he described as the Governor's "noiseless but relentless" efforts at bringing about a rapid and comprehensive development of the state saying that his achievements in this regard was also helping to enhance the security situation in the state

Previous studies have highlighted breakfast's importance for lowering "associated risk factors" for CHD, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Until now, however, a direct link to CHD has never been made. Rimm said: "There are lots of studies exploring the short-term health effects of skipping breakfast but ours was the first to look at those long-term, confirming a high relative
risk of heart disease for skippers." The researchers analysed questionnaire data and health outcomes for 26,902 male health professionals, aged 45-82. During the 16-year study period, 1,572 new cases of CHD were diagnosed. (Interestingly, although only 1.5% of the participants reported eating late at night, those who did were found to have a 55% increase in risk of CHD.) The results are published this week in the American journal Circulation. Despite only men being analysed, the results are thought to have wider implications, said Rimm. "We do have a parallel studyrunning which looks at similar factors in women, and the early results may be indicating the effects on diabetes, weight gain and blood
pressure are actually stronger than those in men … I think that lifestyle factors tend to be stronger in women than men. Women with diabetes, for instance, tend to have a higher risk of heart attack than men with diabetes." The study outlined how participants who missed breakfast had similar calorie intakes to those who did not,suggesting they ate more at later points in the day. The problem, Rimm said, is that this concentrated calorie intake over fewer meals puts"unnecessary stress" on the body, creating unhealthily large spikes of blood glucose that would be reduced by smaller, more frequent meals. Victoria Taylor, a senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, said: "In the morning rush it can be all too easy to skip breakfast, but this study suggests this could have a bigger impact on our health than we might think. "However, these researchers only looked at men aged over 45, so we would need to see further research to confirm that breakfast has the same impact on the heart health of
other groups of people."Rim acknowledges this point, but points out that other studies have found similarly adverse effects on younger people of skipping breakfast. More difficult in this study, Rimm said, was accounting for lifestyle differences between skippers and eaters, such as smoking, alcohol consumption and exercise. "We took those into account to the best of our abilities but of course there's still a chance that there are some residual effects that we can't account for statistically," he said."We realise this is only an observational study, but what we're seeing is probably more causation than correlation - if only because there's a whole body of literature now that suggests a biological phenomenon related to skipping breakfast."
EATING FISH REDUCES RISK OF SUFFERING CHRONIC DISEASES
The omega-3 fatty acids in fish, especially oily fish, explain the dramatic drop in someone's chances of developing the chronic inflammatory disease that blights the life of an estimated 690,000 Britons. The Swedish study, reported in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases medical journal, is the latest authoritative endorsement by
medical researchers of fish's protective role against a range of illnesses. Consumption once a week of salmon or other fatty fish such as trout, kippers ormackerel reduces the risk of rheumatoid arthritis by 52%, according to researchers led by Professor Alice Wallin, of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Eating lean fish such as cod, tinned tuna or haddock four times a week also confers the same benefit, they found. But they said that someone has to sustain such intake of fish for at least 10 years to enjoy the dramatic drop in their chances of. developing a condition which causes pain and swelling in joints. Long-term consumption of any type of fish. at least once a week is also useful, and is associated with a 29% lower risk of the disease, they added.

FG DISBURSES 130 BILLION NAIRA TO NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
Pius Anyim stated: " We are pleased to say that the committee has completed its work and the report has been approved by the Federal Executive Council and the
National Economic Council. The President has set up the Governor Suswan Committee for its implementation. N100 billion has been harnessed for the committee's
disbursement and 61 universities in the country are benefiting from this take-off programme. "Traditionally, universities pay this to deserving staff but because of the amount which ASUU claims as arrears, government decided to assist the university councils to pay. It should be noted that government did not receive any computation of amount involved until February 2013. By this. computation, ASUU is claiming N92 billion as arrears for three years' payment based on percentage range of between 15 and 20 per cent of personal cost." Chairman, Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities, Prof. Kimse Okoko, commended government for its efforts. Okoko called on chancellors to use the funds judiciously while appealing to ASUU to call off the strike.
Prof. Mohammed Hamise, Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors commended government for the N30 billion to university councils to defray the arrears of the peculiar allowances.

At a briefing in Lagos, ASUU's President, Dr. Isa Faggae, claimed that government had declared it would not implement the agreed injection of funds to revitalise the public universities, but was only making a dubious
statement of supporting some universities with N100 billion. He said: "Government had also declared that
it will not pay university academics their earned allowances which accumulated from2009 to 2013. Rather, it is talking about providing N30 billion to assist various
Governing Councils of Federal Universities to defray the arrears of N92 billion owed to all categories of staff in the university system." Narrating the union's experience at the last meeting with the Government held on Monday,
Faggae said: ASUU was shocked by the level. of deceit, dishonesty, and lack of integrity. displayed by the Government. Never in the history of ASUU-Government relations have we, as a union, ever experienced the kind of volte-face exhibited by Government. At one stage in the interaction, the Secretary to the Government Federation ridiculed the agreement, the MoU and the Needs Assessment Report, mocking the Minister of
Education to "go and give them N400 billion," at which members of the government scornfully laughed."
He argued that the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led Implementation Committee was being used as smokescreen to "deceive ASUU, Nigerian students and their parents, as well as other unsuspecting members of the public on the purportedly released N100 billion for the implementation of the Needs Assessment Report.

Facebook's systems that let him post to any user's page, including users not on his Friends list. Such an exploit would be a virtual gold mine for spammers, scam artists and others seeking to take advantage of the site's roughly 1 billion users worldwide. On his blog, Shreateh posted a series of e- mails he said were exchanged between him and Facebook security. After the first one, a Facebook employee responded that the link he attached was bad.
Shreateh had included a post -- an Enrique Iglesias video -- he says he posted on the page of a woman who went to college with Zuckerberg. He speculated that Facebook's
security team couldn't see it because they weren't on her Friends list. Somebody buy Mark Zuckerberg some clothes
Facebook responded to his second message to say theissue he was reporting was not a bug. His response: "ok that means I have no choice other than report this to mark himself on facebook."

FG CAN'T MEET ASUU DEMANDS: DR. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala
federal government does not have enough to meet the union's demands. Okonjo-Iweala was speaking today in Minna at the annual National Council on Finance and Economic Development meeting, with the theme "Restructuring Nigeria's Finances", where she revealed that the University lecturers were demanding N92billion in extra allowances. She made it clear that the FG cannot meet up with the stated amount, as it is trying to reduce the structure of public expenditure. She said: "At present ASUU wants the government to pay N92 billion in extra
allowances when resources are not there and when we are working to integrate past increases in pensions. We need to make choices in this country as we are getting to the stage where recurrent expenditures take the bulk of our resources and people get paid but can do no work. Okonjo-Iweala also argued that if these demands are met, and "we continue to pay them salaries and allowances, we will not be able to provide infrastructure in the universities."
How long is this strike going to last?? Only time will tell.

the major road from single carriage to dual carriage road up to Arochukwu whereas, the dual carriage stopped at Isieke Ibeku primary school less than 10 kilometers from the tower. The most worrisome aspect of it all is that it was done before the very eyes of journalists who
incidentally are also residents here. They know the truth but choose to report lies to the public who they ought to be their trustees. They keep snapping and placing Secretariat road on the pages of newspapers as if it's the only road we have in Abia state. Try to visit our public
schools, you will feel sorry for the teachers and students" he said regrettably. To authenticate the verity of these claims, our correspondent drove through the road and found out that the dual carriage actually stopped at
Isieke Ibeku primary school and not to Arochukwu as the Governor allegedly claimed. In fact majority of motorists and tricycle riders, who ply the road often, told our correspondent that the road from that point to Bende and
other nearby villages is very deplorable and constitutes a death trap to users. A visit to several public secondary and primary schools within the 17 local government areas of the state also shows that the Education sector in
Abia state is obviously in comatose contrary to the Governor's speech on democracy day. Almost all the school buildings in the state are virtually dilapidated with leaky roofs, broken furniture, doors and windows; some completely abandoned, with heaps of refuse, human excreta and over grown grasses a common sight. There is
a complete absence of modern communication technology such as, computers which is today institutionalized by the educational system. No modern black boards and clean toilets, no functional science laboratory, library, sports
development equipment and technical workshop for the technical colleges. A situation some teachers in the state described as pitiable. A teacher in Holy Ghost Technical College Umuahia (one of the schools, Abia state government recently handed over to the churches) who asked the School Senior Prefect to take our correspondent round the school premises decried the state of education in Abia state and wondered why the state government has decided to toy with the future of the state. Her words, "you can see for yourself the state
of the school government said they returned to the original owners. If you had come here some few months back you will feel sorry for this state. Our principal, the Reverend Father has done much in terms of renovation still, it seem as if nothing has been done. How can a
responsible government say they have handed over a school with all these dilapidated buildings to a church without a takeoff grant"? She asked angrily. According to her, the only responsibility the state government reluctantly accepted is the payment of teachers' salaries for a period of time, while the churches take the
responsibility of the day-to-day running the schools.
She also lamented the disdainful manner teachers in the state are being treated by the state government. She insisted that teachers in the state are not motivated at all; accusing the state government of making life unbearable for them by their constant renege from promises. She cited the delay by the state government to implementing the 27 per cent teacher's salary scale and pro rata recently introduced by the state government to buttress her point. Her words, "the Governor promised to implement
the teacher's salary scale in 2010 and nothing was done until we were forced to embark on an industrial action. Truce was later brokered when he promised to implement it onSeptember, 2011 and the strike was called off. But once again he reneged and moved it to 2012 with a promise that the arrears will be paid together. It was the threat of industrial action by Nigerian Labour Congress and Nigerian Union of Teachers that forced him to pay March and April 2013 salaries in line with the TSS which is even a stipend. For the past four years now, leave allowances, which is the 10 per cent of our annual salaries have not been given to us. Yet the Governor introduced pro rata to ensure that what is given to teachers is tactically taken back. As at July, May salaries have not
