Intel plans online TV service as PC chip sales wane

DANA POINT, California (Reuters) - Top chipmaker Intel Corp plans to launch an Internet television service this year with live and on-demand content, entering a hotly competitive race as its core PC business erodes.
Shifting into an unfamiliar and potentially costly market in which Intel lacks experience and relationships, Erik Huggers, vice president and general manager of Intel Media, said he is negotiating with content providers.
He said hundreds of Intel employees and their families are already testing a set-top box the company will sell as part of the service.
Intel's move puts it into competition with heavyweights like Apple, Amazon and Google that believe the $100 billion cable television ecosystem is ripe for change.
The chipmaker plans to offer consumers smaller bundles of content than those currently offered by cable operators, Erik Huggers, vice president and general manager of Intel Media, told the AllThingsDigital "Dive into Media" conference on Tuesday.
Asked if Intel has inked any content deals, Huggers said he is working with providers and is confident Intel will have a compelling product to launch this year.
"We have been working for (the past) year to set up Intel media, a new group focused on developing an Internet platform," Huggers said. "It's not a value play, it's a quality play where we'll create a superior experience for the end user."
Intel has struggled to get its virtual television service off the ground due to unwillingness on the part of major media content providers to let the company unbundle and license specific networks and shows at a discount to what cable and satellite partners pay, according to sources.
Silicon Valley has been taking aim at the U.S. cable television market - dominated by major distributors such as Comcast and DirecTV Group and program makers like Walt Disney Co and Time Warner Inc. Technology companies see opportunities due to reasons ranging from shifting viewer habits to mounting programming costs.
A STEP BEYOND
Intel's plan, if successful, would go further than products currently offered by Apple, Amazon and Netflix by offering live programming as well as on-demand content.
"There is an opportunity to offer a bundle that can be curated by the consumer, an opportunity to create smarter bundles," Huggers said.
Intel's set-top-box will also have a camera that could be used to automatically steer content and ads toward specific users.
"There's a scenario where the TV recognizes that it's you and says 'Hey, I know what you like. I know what you want to watch', versus the environment we're in today where the TV literally is not interested in you at all," Huggers told Reuters In an interview.
Some media executives are sceptical that Intel will be able to convince content providers to agree to terms that are attractive enough to make its service viable. That view was shared by Bernard Gershon, head of digital consultancy GershonMedia and a former Disney senior vice president for strategic planning who helped develop Disney's online strategy.
"The chance that Intel launches is zero," Gershon, who speaks with media and digital executives, told Reuters at the conference. "They haven't cut any deals with any content companies, and they are not offering something that differentiates itself enough on service or price to get the deals done."
Analysts see Intel's leap into Internet television, along with its growing focus on smartphones and tablets, as a way to diversify beyond the slowing PC market.
"The question you have to ask with Intel is, Is anything they do big enough to move the needle?" said Stacy Rasgon, an analyst at Sanford Bernstein. "You're not going to make or break the company on something like this."
Huggers said in the interview that Intel employees are testing the device's user interface, sound and picture quality and other features.
"We're actively testing it in the field with employees. It's not the final product, but it's certainly functional," he said.
Industry insiders have said Apple may unveil a TV-based device that has the potential to shake up the cozy television content and distribution industry the way the iPod and iPhone disrupted music and mobile content.
Sources say Apple, which already sells a $99 set top box called Apple TV that streams Netflix and other content, has opened discussions with providers but it is unclear how much headway it has made, despite its reputation as a tough negotiator.
Huggers previously worked at Microsoft and the BBC, where in 2007 he launched iPlayer, an online service letting viewers catch up with programs they missed on regular television.
"The model we envision is a model where live television and catch-up television live in the same paradigm," Huggers said.
Intel's shares closed up 0.76 percent, at $21.19.

Champions League - Ruthless Juventus punish Celtic errors

Champions League, Celtic Park - Celtic 0 Juventus 3 (Matri 3, Marchisio 77, Vucinic 83)

Celtic were desperately unfortunate to lose 3-0 to Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie as the home side's dominance was undercut by the Italians' greater ruthlessness in front of goal at Celtic Park.
After suffering a first home defeat to Italian opposition since 1969, and an undeservedly-heavy one at that, Celtic's participation in the knockout stages looks to have been brought to a swift end due to a combination of their defensive fragility and impotence in attack.
Efe Ambrose, who only arrived back in Glasgow on Tuesday morning following African Cup of Nations-winning duty with Nigeria, was particularly culpable: the defender was caught out for both Alessandro Matri's third-minute opener and Mirko Vucinic's concluding goal on 83 minutes.
Before Claudio Marchisio scored a second for Juventus, Ambrose also had the misfortune to waste Celtic's best chance of the 90 minutes when he sent a free header straight at Gianluigi Buffon, with all the fine work of an outstanding victory against Barcelona in the group stage being undone by sloppy errors.
Juventus extended their unbeaten run in European matches to 17, with Celtic left needing a result of historic proportions in Turin if they are to reach the quarter-finals of the modern incarnation of the European Cup for the first time. In truth it is likely a task beyond them.
Celtic's team sheet announced they were without Georgios Samaras due to a hamstring problem but Ambrose was included despite his late arrival. It looked a huge gamble, and unfortunately for Celtic, and a stadium full of Bhoys fans who erupted with noise when the two teams emerged, the defender looked ill-prepared and found himself quickly at fault for the opening goal.
Ambrose failed to deal with a high ball and allowed Matri to muscle past him. The striker stabbed a shot under Fraser Forster and the ball just managed to sneak across the line before Kelvin Wilson hooked his foot round it and Marchisio swept the ball into the roof of the net himself.
It was a desperate setback yet Celtic never lost the courage to attack the reigning Serie A champions, raining a succession of shots in on the goal of the great Buffon. Victor Wanyama, so impressive against Barcelona, was prominent as he tested the Italy number one with two feisty long rangers, while Kris Commons also joined in with a thunderous first-time drive that Buffon did well to save with his fingers.
As impressive as their energy and application were, Celtic always looked vulnerable to balls over the top, particularly from Andrea Pirlo who was stroking the ball around extravagantly at times. One high ball allowed Matri to get the better of Ambrose again before Marchisio fired wide from a Federico Peluso cross, and the midfielder saw another effort blocked after a ball over from Pirlo allowed Vucinic to snake past Forster and cross.
Celtic's physical intensity drew a tetchy response from Juve. Scott Brown and Andrea Pirlo had to be separated following a couple of enthusiastic challenges from the Celtic skipper, while a rather farcical interlude saw both Gary Hooper and Stephan Lichtsteiner booked for persistent pushing in the box, with the two players continuing to go at it from every set piece and Lichsteiner in particular pushing his luck when constantly grappling with his opponent.

Pope Benedict resigns: Could the next Pope come from AFRICA

Cardinal Francis Arinze, 80, from Nigeria is the favourite to succeed (PA)There are several papal contenders waiting in the wings, but no obvious front-runner - as was the case when Pope Benedict was elected pontiff in 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II.

Here are the main contenders:

Cardinal Francis Arinze -
odds 15/8

Born in Nigeria, 1932, the 80-year-old would be the first African in 1,500 years to sit on the throne of St Peter.

He was baptised on his ninth birthday after converting.

He was educated at Urban University in Rome and earned a post-graduate qualification from London University.

Cardinal Arinze was ordained in 1958 and became the world's youngest bishop, aged 32, in 1965. He was created cardinal in 1985

THE BLACK BERRY 10 L SERIES

The BlackBerry 10 will feature an L-series smartphone (code-named London) and an N-series smartphone (code-named Nevada). The L-series will boast a 768 x 1280 screen resolution with 356ppi. The screen is expected to be about 55mm wide. The N-series looks to be a bit stouter with a 52mm screen, 720 x 720 resolution, 330ppi, and a QWERTY keyboard. Both lines will contain the usual NFC compliances, and two new apps called FocalPoint and Story Maker.
Here are the new specs of the BlackBerry 10 Laguna leaked today.

RIM has been in serious trouble lately. The Canada-based company has reported $518 million in losses in its quarterly earnings call back in June and plans to cut 5,000 out of the company’s 16,500 jobs. The BlackBerry 10 is poised to be the company’s saving grace, but chances of that are slim with the recent unveiling of Apple’s eternally popular smartphone, the iPhone 5, and with Samsung recently announcing plans to upgrade its Galaxy series, the S4, only three months after releasing the S3.
The BlackBerry Jam Americas event is scheduled to kick off on September 25 and last through the 27. Much like how Apple’s iPhone 5 Event at the Yerba Buena Center last week showcased the iPhone 5, new iPad, iPod Touch, and iTunes, RIM is hoping the BlackBerry event will bolster sales and keep the company afloat.
Stay tuned to BostInno for more on the latest leaked photos and specs from RIM and more. But what do you all think? Does the BlackBerry 10 stand a chance against the likes of Apple and Samsung? Which mobile devices do you all prefer and why? Let us know in the comments section below.

Pope Benedict XVI
By SaharaReporters, New York
President Goodluck Jonathan has applauded the “exemplary wisdom and courage” of Pope Benedict XVI in voluntarily relinquishing the Papacy on account of his advanced age and growing inability to keep up with the physical and mental demands of the office.

In a statement by the presidency today, Mr. Jonathan wished Pope Benedict a very peaceful and restful retirement.
“The President trusts that even in retirement, Pope Benedict XVI will continue to contribute to the spiritual well-being of the world in every possible way and that he will continue to offer prayers to God Almighty for global justice, equity, peace and progress,” the statement said.
He also prayed for wisdom and divine insight for the College of Cardinals to elect a worthy successor who will build on Pope Benedict’s commendable achievements as head of the Catholic Church.
