MASS WEDDING FOR 1000 WIDOWS HELD IN KANO YESTERDAY

ONE thousand widows were Saturday handed over in marriage to their chosen husbands by the Kano State governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, as part of government’s initiative to ameliorate social decadence and strengthen marriage institution in the state.

1.2 m UTME candidates won’t gain admission – FG

The Federal Government on Saturday said of the 1,735,720 students  that registered for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, only 520,000 will gain admission.
Addressing journalists at the Federal Government College, Suleja, Niger State, after monitoring the examination, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, blamed this on the low-carrying capacity of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
She said, “The major challenge is a country like Nigeria having 1.7 million sitting for examination. The space we have is 520,000 for federal, states, private universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

KIDNAPPERS KILL FORMER ANAMBRA STATE DEPUTY GOVERNOR

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The former Deputy Governor of Anambra State Dr. Chudi Nwike, who was kidnapped on March 19, has been killed by his kidnappers who had demanded N30 million ransom which they collected a negotiated amount.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) said in a statement that the body was identified at the Agbor Police Station in Delta State by the Anambra State Chairman of the party), Chief Amaechi Obidike, State Secretary Barr Emeka Ibe, and the victim’s brother, Dr.Bufo Nwike.

The statement noted that the family had negotiated and paid a ransom prior to the discovery of the body, Bufo Nwike handling the negotiations and arranging to pay to the kidnappers N5million at an undisclosed location in Delta State.

That ransom was in paid on April 5, but the kidnappers, after collecting the money from the courier, cut off all further communications.  The body was discovered thereafter.

“We are tremendously ashamed of the circumstances of his death and wish we could now erase from history that a former Deputy Governor of a State in Nigeria died in this manner,” the statement said.

The party called on the security agencies, in view of the fact that they did not succeed in tracking down the abductors of the former Deputy Governor while he lived, to “rise and smash all obstacles on the way to unearthing the abductors and killers of ACN’s rare gem, an embodiment of peace and knowledge.”

GOV. ROTIMI AMAECHI DEBUNKS RUMOURS ABOUT PRIVATE JET

Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers on Thursday described as ``false and mischievous'' the report that Rivers Government acquired four aircraft in preparation for 2015 election.
A national daily alleged that Amaechi had in the last four months, acquired four aircraft, two armoured helicopters and two private jets, for political campaign in the 2015 presidential elections.
An armoured helicopter sells at about $18 million, while the Gulf Stream costs $10 million.
The paper further reported that $56 million (N9 billion) was spent on the acquisition of the helicopters and the two Jets.
 Amaechi, who spoke with State House Correspondents, however, dismissed the report, alleging that the newspaper was only trying to be popular by being mischievous.
He admitted that the State Government acquired the two helicopters for security surveillance not for political reason.
He said the helicopters would be controlled by the Nigerian Air force for patrol of the state.
``The truth is that, and the Federal Government is aware, they gave us approval to buy two helicopters to fly around the state for the purpose of security and we have done that, we bought and we paid.
``Up till now, they have not allowed the helicopter to come in. May be they are afraid that it is for 2015.
``Please help us beg them on behalf of the state that we need the aircraft to be able to secure the people of the state.
``Again, it is not within our control, it is in the control of the Nigerian Air force. Well, we will hire a civilian pilot but Nigerian security will manage it, not us.
``So, how will you use what is in the hands of Nigerian security to campaign? You see the mischief?”
 According to him, the two helicopters will ensure that Rivers is under watch for 24 hours.
 Amaechi also dismissed the insinuation that he was contemplating decamping from the PDP to another party.

50 feared killed in auto crash along Ore-Benin expressway

Ugbogui town in Edo state today witnessed great horror, as a fatal accident which occurred some hours ago may have claimed about 50 lives.
The incident happened when a diesel tanker and a trailer collided with a fully-loaded commercial luxury bus.
Witnesses say the bus which was coming from the Lagos end went on fire after the collision.
They added that only few trapped passengers were seen trying to escape. It is yet unknown if they made it.

Military and road safety officials are presently at the scene controlling traffic, while men of the fire service are also said to be present, although they arrived late.

UN URGES STRICT HYGIENE TO STOP THE SPREAD OF H7N9 VIRUS

 The United Nations on Friday presented a list of recommendations, including a strict hygiene culture and keeping different breeds of animals apart, to try to curb the spreading of the H7N9 flu virus which has killed six people in China.
"With the virus harder to detect, good biosecurity measures become even more essential to reducing the risk of virus transmission to humans and animals," said Juan Lubroth, the chief veterinary officer of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
Among the precautions, the FAO recommended farmers and other livestock handlers to regularly wash their hands and keep animals separate from living areas, warning that "close contact with infected animals can put people at risk".
The organisation also said people should avoid eating sick animals and that they should not be fed to other animals.It recommended keeping different types of animals and species apart and to cull infected animals "if the human threat is confirmed as animal in origin".
"It is important that all signs of illness or sudden and unexplained deaths in poultry, farmed birds, wild birds or other animals are reported to the authorities so that they can deal with them safely and help stop the virus spreading," it said.
Lubroth said that "with this virus we don't have a red flag that immediately signals an infection. This means farmers may not be aware that virus is circulating in their flock. Biosecurity and hygiene measures will help people protect themselves from virus circulating in seemingly healthy birds or other animals."
The number of confirmed human infections in China rose to 16 Friday, with four of the six fatalities in Shanghai. Officials said two new infection cases had been detected in the eastern province of Jiangsu, and a seven-year-old girl had been quarantined in Hong Kong for tests after returning from Shanghai, showing flu-like symptoms.

YAYA TOURE EXTENDS HIS CONTRACT WITH CITY

As his Manchester City squad readies itself for this Monday’s in-town derby with Manchester United, playmaking midfielder Yaya Touré has agreed to a four-year contract extension that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2017.
According to the Guardian, “the deal is based around incentives, so if enough of these are triggered [Touré] can expect to earn around the same as his current salary of around £220,000 a week.”
Rumors swirled earlier this week that the Ivorian was on his way out of City, just one year removed from helping Roberto Mancini’s side to their first Premier League title in 44 years.
”This is where I want to be,” the 30-year-old said. “When I first arrived at City, every time I went to sleep I would dream about us winning something; now it is about us being the best team in whatever competition we take part in. I will never forget how I have been treated here by the fans, the club and the owners, and nothing would give me greater pleasure than to finish my career as a Manchester City player.”
“I want to continue winning titles and trophies and continue to make history,” he continued. “I have enjoyed all of my time here and can't wait for the next chapter. This is an incredible club to be part of with fans that support a team to the end whatever the circumstances.”
He also looked ahead to the big clash with United, set to win the league at a whopping 15 points clear of City.
