NEW YEAR RESOLUTION: ITS ORIGIN AND EXAMPLES.
RELIGIOUS ORIGIN
The ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. In the Medieval era, the knights took the "peacock vow" at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry. At watchnight services, many Christians prepare for the year ahead by praying and making these resolutions There are other religious parallels to this tradition. During Judaism's New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and
culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one's wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. People may act similarly during the Catholic fasting period of Lent, though the motive behind this holiday is more of
sacrifice than of responsibility, in fact the practice of New Year's resolutions partially came from the Lenten sacrifices .The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon self- improvement annually. Participation At the end of the Great Depression, about a quarter of American adults formed New Year's resolutions. At the start of the 21st century, about 40% did.
EXAMPLES
Some examples include resolutions to donate to the poor more often, to become more assertive, or to become more environmentally responsible. Popular goals include resolutions to Improve physical well-being: eat healthy food, lose weight, exercise more, eat better, drink less
alcohol, quit smoking, stop biting nails, get rid of old bad habits Improve mental well-being; think positive,
laugh more often, enjoy life Improve finances: get out of debt, save money, make small investments Improve career: perform better at current job, get a better job, establish own business Improve education: improve grades, get a better education, learn something new (such as a foreign language or music), study often, read
more books, improve talents Improve self: become more organized, reduce stress, be less grumpy, manage time, be more independent, perhaps watch less television, play
fewer sitting-down video games Take a trip Volunteer to help others, practice life skills, use civic virtue, give to charity, volunteer to work part-time in a charity organization (NGO) Get along better with people, improve social skills, enhance social intelligence Make new friends Spend quality time with family members
Settle down, get engaged/get married, have kids
Try foreign foods, discovering new cultures Pray more, be closer to God, be more spiritual Success rate A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol involving 3,000 people showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% of the study's participants were confident of success
at the beginning. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying "lose weight"), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends Quoting Frank Ra (author of the new year's resolution book "A course in happiness". "Resolutions are more sustainable when shared, both in terms of with whom you share the
benefits of your resolution, and with whom you share the path of maintaining your resolution. Peer-support makes a difference in success rate with new year's resolutions". It is also noted that talking with a counselor about setting goals and new year resolutions can help you keep those resolutions.

EDO STATE GOVERNOR SURVIVES A MOTOR ACCIDENT IN THE EARLY HOURS OF TODAY
Iyamho Village. The incident occurred at about 9.45am at Ewu, in Edo Central Senatorial District, when a Peugeot J5 Bus filled with tomatoes and plantains apparently lost control and rammed into the Governor's
Flag Car from the opposite direction before swerving into a roadside ditch. Three vehicles in the Governor's convoy were in front of the Governor's Flag Car and had passed the Peugeot J5 Bus before it [J5 Bus]
had direct impact with the Governor's car, which had the Governor, his Aide-De-Camp[ADC] and his Driver as occupants. The Governor's Car was badly affected but both occupants of the Peugeot J5 Bus and that of
the Governor's sustained no injuries. The Peugeot J5 Bus was following a truck that was descending the Ewu Slope when it suddenly veered off into the Governor's lane from the opposite direction and directly
impacted on the Governor's vehicle, apparently because of brake failure. The good story is that nobody sustained injuries in both vehicles. The Comrade Governor is hale and hearty, his ADC and other occupants of the Peugeot J5 are also in good condition.
The incident has been reported to the Divisional Police Station at Ewu for further investigation. This is to assure all good people of Edo State that there is no cause for alarm. Their loving Comrade Governor is fine, hale and hearty as well as other occupants of the other affected vehicle. The Comrade Governor is wishing everyone a prosperous new year ahead.

ENERGY SECRETARY IN PHILLIPINES SET TO RESIGN AFTER FAILING TO FULFIL HIS PROMISES.
Energy Secretary in Philippines, Jericho Petilla has expressed his intention to resign after failing to keep his promise to restore electricity to all typhoon-ravaged areas of the country by Christmas Eve. A presidential spokesman said Wednesday that Petilla plans to file his resignation on Thursday. "He intends to submit his resignation, perhaps by tomorrow. Whether the
president will accept his resignation, let us wait for that conversation to take place," said President Benigno Aquino's spokesman Edwin Lacierda on ABS-CBN television, after speaking to the energy chief.

PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN CHRISTMAS MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS
Christian compatriots and all other Nigerians in giving thanks to God Almighty whose Grace and
Benevolence has helped our nation to overcome the many challenges it has had since we celebrated
Christmas last year. The annual commemoration of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ is a most auspicious time for us, as individuals and as a nation, to rededicate ourselves to the virtues and ideals which the Messiah
preached and exemplified during his earthly ministry.
Let us all therefore resolve this Christmas to make the ideals of peace, harmony, tolerance, love and goodwill to all even more manifest in our interactions with others. It remains my sincere belief that no height of human accomplishment is beyond us as a nation, if we
can overcome our differences, such as they are, and forge a binding national consensus to put the progress and well-being of the country above all other considerations. My administration will do all within its powers and abilities to ensure that when representatives of our people assemble for the forthcoming national conference next year, they will have every opportunity and encouragement to make very significant contributions towards forging the required consensus for sustained national peace, unity and progress. It is also my expectation that the national conference will contribute in no small measure towards the urgent resolution of contentious issues which currently hinder our progress as a nation. With God Almighty as our Guide, Strength and Enabler, My Administration will continue to implement its Agenda for National Transformation in furtherance of its avowed commitment to improving the living conditions of all Nigerians. We will continue to count on the prayers, support and cooperation of all patriotic Nigerians in the
coming year as we consolidate and build on our achievements in several sectors including national
security, power supply, communications, transportation, health and education. As we commemorate the birth of the Prince of Peace, let us all strive to honour Him more by living our lives as He taught; by making personal sacrifices for the good of others, by showing greater
love for others, by being fairer and more honest in our dealings with others, by being ever-willing to forgive those who offend us and by always extending goodwill towards others. On behalf of myself, my family and the Federal Government, I wish you all very joyful Christmas celebrations, and a peaceful and prosperous 2014.
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
President,
Federal Republic of Nigeria.
